President's Address
Now entering its 36th year, the Peripheral Vascular Surgical Society (PVSS) has evolved into the premier society for young vascular surgeons.
As part of our stated mission, PVSS "provides a forum for the young vascular surgeon to promote the field of vascular and endovascular surgery through education, scholarship, advocacy, and leadership." While other vascular societies have a broad based membership of vascular specialists in different phases of their career, PVSS is the only vascular society dedicated to young vascular surgeons in the early stages (first 15 years) of their career.
The society is open to all young vascular surgeons interested in a forum for basic, clinical and translational research, an environment to share ideas, opportunity to participate in peer review, participation in society administrative function, and engaging in a collegial atmosphere that fosters development of life-long professional and social relationships. Vascular residents and fellows are also encouraged to become candidate members and become involved very early in their careers.
To promote more active participation among our young members, PVSS has undergone an administrative restructuring over the past few years to allow interested members to become more involved in PVSS committee work and leadership opportunities. Committee structure has been extended to meet increased administrative demand on our society which has included expanded efforts to advocate for young vascular surgeon issues.
PVSS global expansion this upcoming year will include a fresh new look with logo redesign, website upgrade, a revitalized quarterly newsletter, creation of a vascular resident issues committee, extended educational grant opportunities, membership growth, and wider scope Winter/Spring scientific programs.
The PVSS continues to be the only vascular society with biannual scientific programs, fostering presentation and scholarly discussion by young vascular surgeons.
- The 21st Annual PVSS Winter meeting will return to beautiful Steamboat Springs, Colorado, on January 27-30, 2011; The Winter meeting is traditionally a family meeting, with lots to do outside the conference room. The Winter program will include scientific presentations, a complex vascular case session, and a new symposium on young vascular surgeon issues. Manuscript submission and editorial oversight in Annals of Vascular Surgery will continue in the upcoming year.
- The 36th Annual Spring meeting will be held during the 2011 Vascular Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois, June 16-19, 2011. A split submission will continue again this year with a portion of the program accepted through a joint SVS/PVSS program committee partnership (January deadline) and the remainder accepted from our traditional program committee (March deadline). Manuscripts presented at the Spring meeting will continue to be submitted to the Journal of Vascular Surgery, with a continued expected high acceptance rate.
Through our biannual meetings, PVSS will continue to have the highest level of scholarship while giving our members and attendees the chance to submit, present, discuss and promote the field of vascular and endovascular surgery as outlined in our mission statement.
The PVSS welcomes all vascular surgical specialists, young and old, and this year there are more opportunities than ever before to participate, contribute, and learn. On behalf of the officers, committee members, and members of the society, we look forward to seeing you all in Steamboat and Chicago!
Sincerely,
Marc A. Passman, M.D.
President, PVSS
